Our elves are Mr. Jingles and Bell. I was surprised before their arrival to listen to Charlie and Wylie and hear how many things our elves had done that they remembered! Bess does not remember it as clearly but way back when, before Bell was in the picture, our lone elf, Mr. Jingles brought back rocks from Santa because the behavior of our house was a bit on the "naughty" side! He was so tired when he returned to Rock Hill, we found him sleeping the next morning with the note from Santa and the rocks beside him! To this day, Charlie and Wylie can recall this event with Mr. Jingles!
When our elves arrived 2 days ago, the excitement in the house was contagious! They were back, Mr. Jingles and Bell! For the older 3, this was a delight- they were so happy to know their elves had chosen to return! For Ben, this was a bit on the new side but he picked up rather quickly!!
In fact, their arrival was especially for Ben! Our child who only care to use the potty once a day and then refuses to use it after that!! The elves thought this was their chance to do their part to encourage little Squirt !
This morning, we awoke to find our elves leaving a list of "RULES" we should all be following in this household! Despite the fact that the elves had left rules, the kids loved this and loved that they could read the words on the fridge themselves!!
That was...
Until this afternoon...
I arrived home on a mission to finally complete the mammoth tree lighting I had been in the process of for 3 days. The girls were being fabulous, which was actually surprising, but the boys... the boys... WERE BONKERS!!! One things after another was being fought over. Every two minutes someone was complaining about the other one. He took this from me. I want that from him. And on and on and on it was going!! I was at my wits end!! Here I was loading up the kids in the car on the quest for more christmas decor and my boys are going to cause me to have a coronary before I could get there!!
Without thinking, but kind of thinking at the same time, I kept mentioning that the elves could hear all the fussing! I warned them. I encouraged them to get it together. The boys did not listen.
Upon our arrival home from the decor hunt, we discovered another message left on our fridge. Immediately Bess teared up and Wylie just put her head down and sat on the couch. Charlie went and looked in several rooms for Mr. Jingles and Bell but then never mentioned that he couldn't find them- even though I kept seeing him look under things and behind things !
It was pretty upsetting! However, the elves clearly had to do what the elves had to do!!
When his daddy arrived home, Charlie was given the suggestion that he should probably write a note to Santa apologizing for his behavior that had caused the elves to leave! Charlie didn't jump up right then and head to do it however, about 30 minutes later, he arrived in the kitchen was the most precious letter I have ever seen!
While wanting to hug the preciousness out of him, I had to remain in Mom Mode and show my composure!! So, I reminded him, if he wanted Santa to see his letter, he should probably hold it up to the "Santa Camera" when the green light was on! (We hear at the Bailey house do not know of such things as fire detectors yet despite going on a field trip to the Fire Station! We are still under the belief that those are "Santa Cameras" and they flash green (or red) because Santa is watching .... at all times...in every store, restaurant and room!! It really is a great little fib that we certainly will clear up one day... but not today!!)
Any who, Charlie took his little self of preciousness and walked to the closest "camera" he could find and this is what I witnessed! Him reading his note to Santa.
To cap off his efforts, he chose to hang it on the fridge so the elves could take it to Santa tonight. Ironically, he chose the word NICE to use to hang it with!!
So we shall see. Did the efforts of Charlie matter to Santa and his elves? Will they decide to return or will they remain "gone" for another day... just to make sure our behavior is in check!?!?
This whole event makes me wonder though. If Mr. Jingles bringing back rocks was 2 years ago and Charlie and Wylie remember it vividly, did I just scar my son for life with this little "trick"?!
Hope not!!
