Seeing as how temperatures are already hovering near 100 here, I think it is safe to assume Mother Nature missed the memo about the official start date for Summer! You know it is hot when you toddlers, who LOVE nothing more than being outside, tell you it is too hot!
Despite the fact that our temperatures continue to rise, I am so excited about summertime with my little loves!
And what is more “summery” than the official summer food of the Bailey house…
WA - MELON!!!
For days I have been promising these little loves I would cut up our watermelon. So tonight after dinner, everyone gathered in their chair to help mommy cut the “wa-melon”!
I had anticipated cutting it up, giving everyone a bowl and my kitchen remaining semi-tidy! However, their desires to eat their watermelon won me over so sticky countertops it was!
Charlie could eat his weight in watermelon these days! The kid is ALL ABOUT some watermelon! And don’t you dare suggest cutting it up- this kid goes in hardcore! No messing around here!
Just look at this face!!!
Wylie was (hold on…get ready to be shocked) VERY concerned about having a rag to wipe her hands and face with during watermelon fun! I honestly think she spent more time wiping her hands and face then she did eating! Bless her bones!
Our sweet Baby Bess was a wee bit confused and was adamant about eating the skin of the watermelon. She had to learn the hard way it was not so tasty and then she quickly headed for the good stuff!
Don’t worry, this was a true family event! Even Brother Ben who had been watching patiently from his bouncy seat on his throne on the countertop was able to take part in the summer staple festivities!
Believe it or not, he actually sucked on the watermelon like a passy or bottle! Is this a sign he will be a good eater?!
So, we are already about 3 watermelons in for the summer! And I KNOW there are many, many more to come! I really wish I had been on my game enough to attempt to grow some out at one of the grandparent’s houses because I think the little loves would have been thrilled to visit their wa-melons and watch them grow! Maybe next summer! Who knows, if I get desperate enough for entertainment this summer, we might take up seed spitting! Wouldn’t that be a sight!!
For now, a upcoming trip to pick strawberries will have to suffice as our gardening experience!
Happy Wa-melon Eatin’ Ya’ll!!

What would summer be without watermelon?! It's a staple in the Wiersma household too. Bess' face in the first picture is priceless!!! I love it. By the way, I always love catching up on your blog!
