O Little Town of Bethlehem...

The Nativity Scence. A humble stable for Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus. The Angel of the Lord, the Three Wise Men when combined help to retell the greatest story that even 2 year olds need to hear.

So this was my plan. Set up the absolutely precious nativity scence I had to search high and low for and begin a daily ritual of helping my sweet little loves come to know Baby Jesus and His incredible story. Folks, that was (and continues to be) the plan. However, the mind of a 2 year old is creative and innocent. And sometimes, sees things slightly different than I had envisioned them being.

We began with a brief introduction to the main people in the story. Joseph, Mary and Baby Jesus and our talk of the manger.

We learned that Baby Jesus loves us and kisses. So when we hold him, it is not unusual to see us give Him a kiss first!

But even the animals of the story need love too. Thank you sweet Charlie for kissing the shephard's dog.

Sometimes, we just stop by to survey the story. (On a side note... Wylie is totally OBSESSED with Charlie's boots and the gut... well, I just think it is precious. This is our typical evening wear at 709!)

As mentioned, I have tried hard to correctly teach this story to my loves. But leave it to 2 year olds to create their own version of how things should go.

First, why should the Wise Men walk to see Baby Jesus when they can "ride" with a "hat"? This is just one of Charlie's adaptations to the story!

Charlie also has wondered just why everyone always shows the Angel of the Lord above the stable. Clearly, she belongs inside where the action is. Why not let Wilbur the Pig survey the land for visitors coming to see Baby Jesus!

In the version I have tried to teach to Charlie and Wylie, Mary and Joseph ride the donkey to the inn. Charlie's version is much more 2009. Why walk when you can travel by a Tonka truck? Here, Charlie is carrying the donkey and ...

yes, Baby Jesus. It appears as though he is arriving at the stable in Tonka truck.

Finally, what nativity scence would be complete without Elmo stopping by? Thankfully Charlie was able to help Elmo go "night night" beside Baby Jesus.

But wait, just in case Elmo needs a bedtime snack before "night night", Wylie is prepared. Thankfully she was so willing to share her cookie with Elmo before he drifted off to sleep!

All in all, Charlie and Wylie's version of the Christmas Story may have a few minor adjustments that have been created here and there, but, if in the end they know Baby Jesus loves them and they know His story, is it really all that bad? I happen to believe, He may even have a smile on his face seeing the hands of little ones learning in their own way about Him.

And really, who are we say, Baby Jesus might have enjoyed a ride in a Tonka truck or a quick visit from Elmo!

Too cute Kasie. Don't worry though...we're seeing the same things over here (minus the tonka truck). ;) Anne and Papa bought Aves the same nativity scene. Everyone ends up on top of the manger but the angel. And lots and lots of kisses for everyone...especially the donkey. Hehe. If only we knew what they were thinking...
